About Tour

We will start the day swimming above a reef that forms part of the world’s second largest, and then with turtles in their natural habitat as they feed on the sea grass at Akumal, guided by a local licensed guide. We will then move onto the ruins at Tulum, one of Mexico’s most iconic sites, with ruins perched on a clifftop above the turquoise Caribbean waters and Tulum's white sand beaches. From there we will drive towards Coba, stopping for lunch (not included) in a local Yucatecan restaurant before then entering the archaeological site. You will be guided around Coba with clear relatable explanations of the buildings, their uses, the architecture and way of life of the Mayans prior to the Spanish Conquest and today.

What to expect

  • Pick-up can be at any address in Cancun, Puerto Morelos or Playa del Carmen. If staying in a hotel with a security gate, please advise Señor Travel Bug in advance of your room number which will be required to gain access and pick you up.

  • You will swim with turtles in the Caribbean, in the protected marine preserve at Akumal, Mayan for 'land of the turtles'. Respecting all the rules of the park to protect the turtles, you will be accompanied by both a locally accredited guide who specializes in the turtles and your tour guide for the day, recording video of you during the experience. You must wear a lifejacket (included), cannot wear flippers, have a floating ring if desired. You will, wind-dependent, board a boat for 3-5 minutes to arrive at the coral reef where you will then swim for approximately five minutes, before swimming to the protected area. You will then swim in the area where the turtles visit for approx 45 minutes, perhaps also seeing manta rays and other sealife. Note that if wind closes this activity, an alternative of a guided snorkel through an underground cenote & river is available.

  • You will visit the Mayan archaeological site at Tulum, unique for being such an important site located directly on the coast and with some of the most iconic views in Mexico, ruins on cliffs above a beach and the turquoise Caribbean. Your tour guide for the day will explain the architecture, culture and history of the Mayans both generally and at Tulum specifically. You will see lots of iguanas and your guide will take photos for you throughout the tour, which will all be shared with you at the end of the day. A tour of the site typically lasts approximately one hou

  • You will be taken on a guided tour of the ruins, seeing the second highest pyramid in the region, after only Calakmul. See many temples, housing, a ball court and learn how the Maya lived, learn about their mathematical advances and something of their script, the first in the Americas, as well as the important role that women played in the history of this site and throughout the Mayan world. The tour will last approximately 1:30 hours.

  • The tour will deliver you back to your pick-up point (or any other destination in Cancun, Puerto Morelos or Playa del Carmen if preferred)
