WILDLIFE & NATURE

Akumal

The ‘Place of the Turtles’ has been a feeding ground for thousands of years, and you can now swim with its locals, a variety of turtles, rays, squid and other fish. You must swim with a licensed guide who serve to protect this beloved species.

Punta Laguna

A protected area where spider and howler monkeys roam freely in large groups, and where a local community takes its conservation efforts very seriously. This is also an excellent spot for seeing the jungle’s birdlife.

Isla Blanca

My ‘happy place’, Isla Blanca is the nearest and last virgin beach on the outskirts of Cancun. 11km (7 miles) of uninhabited uninterrupted sand, an inland laguna teeming with birdlife, extensive sand dunes and the turquoise water of the Caribbean sea.

Rio Lagartos

A small town form which you will want to take a boat tour into the waterways just inside the coast. See flamingoes, pelicans, osprey, crocodiles, a variety of eagles, cake yourself in cleaning mud, dip in a cenote and maybe see the pink waters of Las Coloradas.

Ruta de los Cenotes

This road passes a great many cenotes, cutting through the jungle, and brings with it an extraordinary variety of exotic and colourful birdlife.

Sian Kaan

An enormous biosphere reserve to which you can tour in boat from Tulum or Punta Allen. Fish for barracuda and make a ceviche on the boat, see turtles, flamingoes, spoonbills, sharks in a massive protected area with gorgeous waters.

WILDLIFE & NATURE

Las Coloradas

A somewhat naturally occurring, but artificially accentuated for tourism, body of water that appears pink due to its high salt levels, now used in salt farming. Can also be an excellent spot from which to see wonderful birds, such as flamingoes.

Celestun

An hour from Merida, Celestun is probably the best place at which to see large numbers of flamingoes. On a boat tour you will also travel through the mangroves, perhaps see crocodiles and other impressive bird such as osprey.
