See lots of wildlife in the Cancun and Riviera Maya region, exotic and colourful birdlife in the jungle, potentially multiple species of turtles in the Caribbean sea and perhaps you'll also be lucky enough to see both the spider and howler monkeys further into the jungle in Yucatan's interior. Of course, all wildlife experiences do not guarantee specific animal sightings, but your guide is a former professional photographer who will share with you his best photos at the end of the day, and prepare a summary video of your day of up to 90 seconds as a memory.

What to expect

  • Pick-up can be at any address in Cancun, Puerto Morelos or Playa del Carmen. If staying in a hotel with a security gate, please advise Señor Travel Bug in advance of your room number which will be required to gain access and pick you up.

  • We will start the day early, in the jungle near Puerto Morelos, seeing which of the local wildlife we can see. Being a fully natural experience there are no guarantees on what we see but may include parrots, toucans, eagles, hawks, owls, motmots, trogons, hummingbirds, oreoles, flycatchers, agouti, fox, squirrels.

  • You will swim with turtles in the Caribbean, in the protected marine preserve at Akumal, Mayan for 'land of the turtles'. Respecting all the rules of the park to protect these wild turtles, you will be accompanied by both a locally accredited guide who specialises in the turtles and your tour guide for the day, recording video of you during the experience. You must wear a lifejacket (included), cannot wear flippers, have a floating ring if desired. You will, wind-dependent, board a boat for 3-5 minutes to arrive at the coral reef where you will then swim for approximately five minutes, before swimming to the protected area. You will then swim in the area where the turtles visit for approx 45 minutes, perhaps also seeing manta rays and other sealife. Note that if wind closes this activity, an alternative of a guided snorkel through an underground cenote & river is available.

  • After lunch in either Tulum or Coba (not included), visit the jungle again, further inland, in an area populated by two indigenous species of monkey, howler and spider monkeys. Now protected by law, the Punta Laguna Monkey Reserve has no fences, but has been the home of these monkeys for many years. You can visit the site, hoping to see both species (but subject as always to rules of wildlife - no guarantee!) as well as more birdlife. For an additional USD40 per person, you can experience a Mayan cleansing ceremony, swim in a cave cenote, zipline across a lake and row back.

  • The tour will deliver you back to your pick-up point (or any other destination in Cancun, Puerto Morelos or Playa del Carmen if preferred)
